James, my husband and I are new-ish to video podcasting. We have completed 7 episodes of our Creative Revolution Show. It is a laborious process, no matter how to do it. My husband tried recording with the free version of Riverside, too, and it caused all the problems you mentioned. He even did a trial of the paid version and it wasn't much better. We are also using fairly new, powerful MacBook Pro computers, so it was disappointing to say the least.
After that time-consuming debacle, we went with Zoom to record the interviews. My husband has the upgraded version that allows more than 45-minutes, although we don't usually need more since our goal is to keep the finished show under half an hour. My husband uses Final Cut Pro for video editing. If necessary, he uses LogicPro for audio.
I have success with Adobe Premiere Pro for video. I have used both Adobe Audition and GarageBand for advance audio editing, although Premiere Pro has basic options.
The only free app I have used and can count on is GarageBand. Sorry I am no help with other free alternatives.
All in all, video podcasting is a pain in the ass, but we keep doing it. I guess it's our experiences as recording/performing musicians that keeps us dedicated to arduous processes for little to no money, haha. Your header photo speaks the truth.
Best wishes, and feel free to share your podcasts if and when you move forward!
Thank you, Sharine, for that thoughtful (and helpful) response! Glad to know I'm not alone in my frustrating first attempts. I figured the paid version of Zoom is what people are using but my YouTube queries unfortunately led me to Riverside. I will keep going an see what I can do with this footage, if anything. Thank you again!
PS. Part-time musician myself (drummer) and yep, it's about the love, not the money😂
There are several user friendly free versions of podcasting software such as OBS if you’re doing something live with minimal scene switching. The hardest part to get right is the audio. When I started live broadcasting in 2020, it’s what took me the longest and there have been major improvements since. It also matters what kind of machine you’re using. Windows vs Mac. But if you’re looking to edit and stitch things together in post, that’s different kind of software. Premier and Final Cut Pro are the best, but can be pricey and require a bit of a learning curve. The other apps people have mentioned here that are free, are a bit more user friendly, but don’t give you as many options. If you’re looking to set up a live cast, I can walk you through some steps via zoom.
If you are on Windows try Microsoft's CapCut at https://www.capcut.com/. I have abandoned the other stuff I'd used for years. And the basic program is FREE!
Get the free version of Davincii Resolve. That and premier are my go to for editing. Both can sync and touch up audio tracks easily.
Okay, great. Will check that out. TY!
Glad there are people who can give good advice. Afraid too old to give any advice on podcast editing. Good luck James!
Thanks, yeah, I'm glad I reached out, I've gotten some help!

Once I learned the reality of Hollywood and it's dark, artificial elevation system, I was glad I never had a chance at the fame I thought I wanted.
That said, keep playing music, man!🥁 We need all the TRUE creativity we can muster!

If you are on MAC, they have an online version.
Thank Jim, will check it out!
I can probably help you out with the edit. Email me: my handle at gmail.
As far as the embedding other video. If it’s something like rumble, take a screenshot and link the video to the image. You can’t embed everything.
OK, great. I'd appreciate any help, thank you!
Sure thing. I haven’t received anything, so maybe ping me here when you do email in case it’s going to a spam folder.
